FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Spa Academy?

Spa Academy is an esthetics school. This means we focus on education and training explicitly in the esthetics area, as opposed to hair, fashion design, or a multitude of other things. We offer part-time training as well as a 21 week Esthetics Program. As part of our Full-Time Esthetics Diploma Program our students are required to perform services on the public to gain the necessary experience for a successful career; this means we offer discounted services to the public!

Where are you located?

We are located in Suite J at 511 – 33rd Street West, across from Mayfair Library, just down the street from Safeway.

Is there parking available?

There is ample parking available directly outside Spa Academy for our clients.

What’s the difference between aesthetics and esthetics?

Absolutely nothing when referring to the beauty industry, they are simply different ways of spelling the same word!

Services

Are the students supervised?

All student services performed at Spa Academy receive – at the very least – a pre- and post-check to ensure the students are on the right track and competently perform your service. For students with less experience in a given service, an instructor or supervisor may provide guidance throughout the service or during particularly difficult parts. In some cases you may even receive your student-priced service from one of our professionals in order to aid our students in learning the necessary skills. Your services will be performed to your satisfaction or we will work with you to provide the best solution possible.

What is an Apprentice?

Esthetics is now a recognized trade in Saskatchewan. Our professional estheticians have graduated from school and are apprenticing to become Journeyperson Estheticians in both Esthetician – Skincare Technician and Esthetician – Nail Technician.

Can I wear makeup to facial treatments?

Most facial treatments will require you to remove your makeup, so please plan accordingly.

May I ask the students or estheticians to adjust my service or add something on?

Absolutely! In fact, we insist. If your massage is too firm, the water in your pedicure basin is too hot, or if there is something else you would like adjusted, please bring it to our attention; this is your service!

Can I tan after waxing services?

We do not recommend any exposure to UV light on the areas that have been freshly waxed for at least 24-48 hours as this can be highly irritating and damaging to your skin.

Do you take walk-in appointments?

We are sometimes able to take walk-in appointments, but we can’t guarantee it. We recommend booking at least a week in advance, especially for appointments later in the week (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday).

Is tipping required?

Gratuity, while always appreciated, is at your discretion and should be given only if you feel comfortable and if you feel that the student or professional deserves your praise!

Do you do services on children or teens?
We offer all services (except artificial nails) to anyone 10 years of age and up.

Are group bookings available?

Group bookings are absolutely available! It can be difficult to fit a large group in so please book far in advance. Each group is different so give us a call or head over to our contact page to get more information. We require a credit card # to reserve space for groups of three or more, as well as any appointments/packages that will take over three hours to complete. Failure to cancel appointments within 72 hours of appointment, will result in a 50% charge to credit card.

Can I bring my child to my appointment?

We love children, but waiting patiently in a spa where other clients are receiving services is not the place for them. Our students are working hard to perform your service and work on their education; as much as they would love to entertain your child while you receive your services, they are simply unable to do so. Services can be booked for those that are 10 and older, providing they can sit safely in our stations/equipment. Even some older children have a hard time reaching table tops and foot rests. Often we are unable to work safely around booster style seats and child sized furnature is not avaiable at our school.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask that appointments be cancelled as soon as you know that you cannot make it! At least 48 hours in advance is standard, but we understand that sometimes emergencies arise and this is simply not possible. We do, however, have the rare client that continually cancels appointments at the last minute or continuously fails to show up; in such cases you may be required to pre-pay for your services. We require a credit card # to reserve space for groups of three or more, as well as any appointments that will take over three hours to complete. Failure to cancel appointments within 72 hours of appointment, will result in a 50% charge to credit card.

What type of payments do you accept?

We accept Cash, Debit, Visa, and Mastercard for your convenience. Etranfers for tuition payments can be sent to [email protected]

Training & Education

Is Spa Academy accredited?

Spa Academy is regulated by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Advanced Education and our Full Time curriculum has been approved by the Saskatchewan Apprentice and Trade Certification Commission. Our part-time classes follow the same approved curriculum to ensure our students receive top-notch and standardized education.

What is the difference between Full-Time and Part-Time training?

The esthetics trade is regulated by the Saskatchewan Trades.  Our Esthetics Diploma program Focuses on Esthetician – Skin Care Technician. This intensive course takes a minimum of 700 hours to complete. Students attend school each week day and complete their practical requirements in a true spa environment. Part-time training is designed for those already in the industry, or that have previous beauty industry experience. These classes allow students to learn a specific set of skills, as opposed to the full esthetics trade.Students in the part time courses will complete the majority of the practical assignments away from the academy on their own time schedule. Our part time programs do not include professional business building education.

What is Journeyperson Certification?

Since Esthetics is now a recognized trade in Saskatchewan. Once an esthetician has completed the schooling and practical hours requirements they may take the standardized written and practical examination to achieve their Journeyperson status in one or both of the esthetics trades. Spa Academy’s education programs all have a specific number of hours that qualify towards the education requirement for the esthetics trade.

You can find more information at the Sask Trades website.

What are the age and education requirements?

Students must be at least 18 years of age (16 with the consent of their parent or guardian). We do not require specific levels of education for our programs because we believe the skills required for a successful esthetician cannot be identified on a high-school transcript. As part of the application process we interview each applicant before accepting them to the Full Time Program. Part-Time Classes do not have an interview process and all registrants are accepted.

What sort of certification do I receive?

Full-Time Students who successfully complete our full time program receive a diploma issued by Spa Academy and approved by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Advanced Education in Esthetician – Skin Care Technician. These diploma also qualifies graduates for the training portion of the Esthetics Journeyperson Trade when applying for their Journeyperson examinations.

Part-Time Students who successfully complete their written and practical exams are awarded a Spa Academy Certificate of Qualification in the skill in which they trained and were examined.

What is included in the student kits?

Full time student kits include all necessary tools and implements needed for their class. Full time students are also given access to all working products, professional equipment, and furniture during their on-site training hours.

Part time students kits will contain all necessary tools for their chosen subject, but may require students to purchase/provide working products and furniture while completing practical requirements away from academy.

What are the class hours?

Classes for both full-time and part-time training start at 9:00am and run until 4:30pm; there are some exceptions that will be noted during your first day of class or on your confirmation of enrollment letter.

Can I take a tour of the school?

Absolutely! In fact, we encourage you not to sign up for a class or attend training at an institution without taking a tour first!

Is financial aid available?

Financial Assistance may be available for students who qualify, either through the Canada Student Loans program, or through various funding sources.

Does Spa Academy provide job placement or guarantee employment?

We cannot and do not guarantee employment and we do not actively place our graduates in employment positions. However, may esthetics positions are advertised directly through Spa Academy and we do our best to prepare our graduates for their future career. Included with your training is life-time advice with applying for jobs as well as resume assistance.

When should I book my exam for my certification?

We would love for you to be able to take the exam as soon as 4 weeks after the last day of class, so that all the information is still fresh in your mind. if that, for any reason doesnt work for you, you can book the exam in between the last day of class and 12 months. This is highly recommended as any time after the 12 months, you will no longer disqualify for your exams.

I have lost/misplaced my certificate, how do I get it reprinted?

If a certificate/diploma must be re-issued an administrative fee of $75 will be charged. Certificates issued more than 3 years ago; the student must challenge the practical examination to have new certification issued. The course information is constantly being improved to better your education, it would be in best interest to you to retake our class for updated information.

My confirmation letter says I need a “4 drawer trolley/cart” Why and where do I get this?

As a school, we do highly recommend that you purchase a 4 drawer trolley so that you can store your implements and products easily. We do not have sufficient space to store your kit. It is easier for you, as a student, to keep all your tools together and to be more efficient when participating in class. We recommend going to Walmart or Canadian Tire to purchase one of these Trolley/Cart. (this is not needed for every class, please refer to confirmation letter)
